"Excellent protection, lightweight, and stylish too!" 2008-02-22
By Tanya D. Sloan (Charlotte, NC)
This is a great helmet - very light for the protection it offers. It will start off a bit snug, and my hurt your head a bit, but then it breaks in and feels wonderful. It does not move around while riding, which is important for safety reasons. Also, it is HOT lookin', which the girly girl in me appreciates.. but also tough lookin', to suit the tomboy side that requires said helmet :-)

 "A real life saver" 2008-06-26
By Richard A. Wehe (Sacramento, CA United States)
Four weeks ago while riding at 20 mph a squirrel darted from the side of the trail and into my front wheel. The wheel immediately stopped rotating and I somersaulted over the handlebars and landed directly on the left front of my Giro helmet. The helmet's interior broke in 4 sections and the exterior shell sustained a crushing blow. I suffered only a headache. That evening I ordered a new Giro Animas helmet and 2 weeks later I was back on the bike leading a 3 day tour up the Marin and Sonoma coastline. My doctor told me that the helmet likely prevented a serious and possibly fatal head injury. The Giro helmet is truly a life saver.

The Animus is a well designed, comfortable helmet that can be adjusted for a comfortable, secure fit. I will never be without it.

"Very good helmet, typical Giro quality" 2008-06-09
By Paul R. Lanhart (Burnsville, MN United States)
This is a very nice helmet which was acquired at a very reasonable cost for the quality construction that you get. With a lot of the new Giro models out this one probably doesn't get the high kudos that it should. Very comfortable and very sharp!

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that at high speeds such as whizzing downhill there seems to be a bit more wind noise created by my ears than my last Giro. However, not enough of a complaint to keep me from using it every day.

"Dark Bronz..... Two thumbs up!!!!!!" 2009-07-03

Pros: This bike has really great suspension, quick shifting gears, easy maintenance, nice big fat tires :-) ... great handling on trails and down hill rides. over all, Well worth its price.

Cons: It a bit too heavy going up hill ( about 40-45 pounds), disk breaks are only on the front (since it has one it should be in the back but the other breaks work just as well anyway) my only complaint is the crapy pedals it came with...

I recommend this bike but get your self some good pedals...

"Looks good, once you lose the stickers" 2009-06-09
By Michael J. Adams (Annandale, VA United States)
Once you get rid of the 27 "disk brake equipped" stickers, it looks good. I got this from Amazon, and setting it up was tricky. I am familiar with working on bikes, and getting all of the gears and breaks adjusted correctly proved a challenge.

After I finally got it set up, I found the big knobby tires slowed me down a lot on pavement. So I got a set of Forte Greenways ($20/pair) which are lighter and work a lot better on pavement, while retaining decent grip for tougher terrain.

"Great Deal "Vanish Mtn Bike"" 2009-03-16
By B. Daniels
I bought this bike last month from meijers and so far I've enjoyed it but I'm looking to change out the tires to something a little more smoother since I ride mainly street/bike trails.

But The best part was Meijers didn't have a price on bike so the employee told me that it looked similiar to another bike and I got it for $150

I bought this bike for 197.00 at a local retailer and the quality is ok and it looks nice...but you cannot expect to get much of a bike for 2-3 hundred dollars. Most durable bikes will cost you 500.00 and up. For the price it is worth it..u can always upgrade some of the components later.

 "an OK bike" 2008-09-18
By Stanley Phang (Chicago, IL USA)
I bought it from fogdog.com when they had a 25% off and free shipping deal. Even with that deal, I ended up with only saving a few dollars than buy directly from Amazon. But at that time, Amazon only sell these bike through fogdog.

Let's talk about the bike. It looks pretty cool(or at least I think so), with all the disc brake, dual suspension stuff. But the quality is not so great. I think you get what you've paid for. The shifting gears are not stable, for they cannot sustain in some of the combination and will make a lot of noise as they were yelling for a change. The crank start making cyclical noise after like 3 days. But the noise magically disappears after 2 weeks or so. But this back and forth just made me less confident in the quality of this bike.

As I only use it as transportation from my living place to school, and I never give it any maintenance for the month I've owned it, I guess it's what you get for the money. Can't complain.

 "K-rad tire" 2009-06-16
By Martial 323 (CA)
its a great tire for most people. myself, Im on the road most of the time and only the occasional trail. Ive tried slicks too but they are too skiddish for me. The slicks have very little traction and make the bike more twitchy as well. I think the wider tire also allows for a bit of give, little more cushy, better traction and they can handle day to day bumps as well as trails. Lets face it, if you are going to be knee deep in mud, you are going to end up carrying your bike.

the only downfall of the tires is that all of a sudden, they have skyrocketed in price! I bought a set just last year for like 8 or $9.00 per tire. Now they are like 25.per tire but I sold my last bike with them on it! had I know, I would have stripped them off! how can they jump near 300% in under a year? In fact I would doc a star due to the price jump but I can't now that I have voted.

 "A K-Rad Ride" 2009-05-12
By R. Calonge (SoCal)
Needed a street tire for my mountain bike to put in road miles. With the higher PSI, these tires have less rolling resistance and less rolling noise. These have good road grip, especially around the hilly roads and around corners. If you are looking for a commuting tire or a free style tire, the K-Rad is it.

 "Exactly what I wanted." 2009-06-15
By A. Smith (Tallahassee,Fl)
This helmet does exactly like any review says. It protects your head completely.

It was a little snug on my head at first but once I wore it a couple times it loosened just a little. It breathes realistically well for a full face helmet.

Some things I didn't expect:

It is much lighter then I would have expected, which is great. No reason for the carbon one honestly.

Also, I live in an area with lots of bug life. And you know when you hear that buzzzZzz right next to your ear and it scares the crap out of you cause you think its a bee. Well its even worse when riding a difficult trail, but thankfully this thing blocks your ears from that, another great thing I never expected.

Great product overall =]

I have a big head and the large fit me well. The helmet breaths very well, I was no hotter than when I just wore a standard helemt without the face shield. it is light and comfortable. Fortunately I've not needed the face shield yet, but I push myself a little more becuase I feel so protected. And the comfort is amazing. A must have for any serious mountain biker.

Remedy is light and nicely ventilated and most of you feel very good when you riding down from the hill. This helmet is excelente buy with great value.

 "Fantastic bike!" 2009-06-07
By Todd Thomas (Jacksonville FL)
Well, after a long time of researching various bikes, I bought this one. I couldn't find another bike that looked as good, or had as many of the same features as this bike, at the same price point. The bike came mainly assembled, took about an hour to assemble fully and adjust everything to my liking. Took it for a ride and everything works perfectly.

The bike looks like I spent a helluva lot more than I did too. Only thing is the seat is a bit uncomfortable, I'll be replacing it soon, but you can say that about most bikes.

Customer Buzz
 "Great bike" 2009-05-07
By Marcos F. Magalhaes (Pembroke Pines, FL)
This bike was the only one that had everything I wanted (dual suspension, dual disk brakes, Shimano EZ shifters) and was under $350.00. I looked at other review, and people were comparing it with $1000's bikes... That's not even close to fair.

Anyway, if you want a bike that has really good parts, a good setup, and cheap, this is your bike. So far, I put a few miles on it and it is really awesome. Suspension, brakes, tires, weight, everything is better than I expected based on the price. A good exercise: compare it with those $300-$350 bikes you see at Sports stores and you'll realize how better this bike is.

Only one con: despite the easy assembly, the front derailer came totally out of alignment. I worked it a bit (I'm no expert), but I will probably spend some $ in servicing it.

2nd review (06/01/09): there's a slight change from the bike you see in the picture and the one I received. The holes in the frame where is installed the bottle support face down. This is a problem, since once you have it with a bottle and the front suspension goes down a 1 inch the front tire hits the bottle. Not the end of the world, but I would change my review to 4 1/2 starts if possible.

"Definitely a great bike for the price!" 2009-04-29
By M. Gravitt (Springfield, MO)
For [...] you can't beat this bike! Granted, it's not near as light as the bike shop mountain bikes, but it's also a fifth of the price. I couldn't find another bike for under [...] that had dual suspension AND dual disc-brakes. Now, the partial assembly could have been better, though. Out of the box, the front fork was on backwards, and the derailleurs were totally out of tune! But the front fork was as easy as loosening the nut and turning it around, and the local bike shop tuned the derailleurs for [...] so I now have an awesome bike for right at [...] Overall a great purchase!

"Not bad for price...but plan on doing some work" 2008-11-05
By Drake
I bought this bike new from my local store on sale for $180 dollars. I figured a full suspension, aluminum frame bike with disc brakes for $180 was a deal I couldn't pass up. I wish I would have.

After taking it home and doing an initial setup on the bike (adjusting suspension droop, brake pad clearances, etc.) I took it out for the first ride. I use the bike primarily as a commuter, but take it to the local trails on the weekend. The bike preforms as expected on the streets, but the rear suspension was a little weak for my liking. The bob while pedaling hard uphill takes away a lot of your power to the ground.

After my first ride, I got the bike home and did a second check on it (mind you, this is still the first day). I am meticulous with cleaning and checking my bikes after every off-road session. I found the rear derailler was loose. I took it off of the bike and found that the bike shop that assembled the bike did not use any lock-tite on the bolt. This is not a problem with the bike, but the bike shop. I decided to check all of the fasteners on the bike...same problem.

I have now had the bike for about 5 months and it is serving me pretty well as a daily commuter. I have found that as long as I do the maintenance on the bike, everything is holding up pretty well. The problems that others have had with deraillers not working and brake rub have not been an issue for me.

So you may be thinking, why did I rate the bike a two? Pretty simple, really. The weight of the bike and quality of the components leave something to be desired. I have had to replace all of the bushings on the rear linkage twice in the six months that I have owned the bike. Since I have only gone off-road with it three times, this is more often than I should have to replace them. The rear seat post has a tendency to slip down slowly no matter how much you tighten the clamp. I replaced the seat post and clamp and now have no problems. The seat that comes with the bike is uncomfortable at best. I changed that to a Sette saddle (not one of the big cushy seats) for a more comfortable ride. The rear wheel hub is weak. If you buy this bike, plan on upgrading that as quickly as possible.

Even though I only paid $180 for this bike, I have now invested well over $300 in maintenance and/or repairs. I would have been better off getting the Cannondale hard tail they had on sale for $350. Oh well, better luck next time.

"Good Bike For The Price" 2008-08-15
By L. Robinson
I found this bike on Amazon for what I thought was a decent price ($50 cheaper compared to everywhere else) so I decided to get it. It arrived on time and was in good shape. I'd say it took around 20 min. to get it out of the box and assemble it up properly. As soon as I started riding it I noticed that both the front and rear brake calipers were rubbing against the disc and were making a horrible noise. After a 15 min. adjustment I had it back up and running again and it has worked fine for me ever scince. Just don't buy a $300 bike expecting it to perform like a $1000 bike, because it wont. However, for all the features that you get, and with a little adjusting here and there I think that this is a good bike for the money.

"Easy 2 Assemble, one glitch" 2009-06-14
By R. Boerner (West Hills CA)
I bought this bike for my 5'2" 10 year old. He loves it. Granted we've only had it for a month. It arrived quickly and was easy to assemble. No worries about gears, they were already assembled and good to go. The one glitch; the rear tire was flat the next morning after assembling it. Had to take the gear assembly apart (argh) and replace. Wasn't as bad as anticipated. You can get virtually the same bike already assembled at WalMart now for the same or less $$. Wasn't the case when I bought it. But It seems to be a good sturdy bike.

 "Keeps my head cool!" 2009-08-20
By Austin Guy 2005
Looks good, durable, and keeps my head cool during a long ride. My only complaint is I got a medium (I think I have a rather small head as my last helmet was a small (and I don't think I resemble a bobblehead what so ever) and it barely fits on my head with the adjustment straps expanded to their fullest. So I would buy a large if I had to do it again (hard to try on before it shows up in the mail). Great helmet though!

By xcu (Sherman Oaks, CA)
Great Helmet! I like the design with all the angles and I like the fact the helmet doesnt stick out too much in the back. It's about as compact as a helmet can be and still protect you. Is light and vents well. Not too dorky looking. Buy the right size for you and it fits great. And, of course, NEVER buy a "universal" one-size-fits-all helmet -- that really means it won't fit (they really should be outlawed because they won't provide as good of protection.) This is a really good helmet. I'm going to buy another, in case this one ever gets tested (crash!).

 "Excellent Helmet" 2008-12-26
By Anthony Ingenito (Sarasota, FL)
I bought this helmet because my old helmet almost made me pass-out after a few strenuous trail runs in the Florida heat. I had read other reviews (on MTBR) where people had claimed that this helmet had excellent air flow. They were correct. You can actually feel the air flowing through the deep grooves in the underside of the helmet. The helmet is light, and has extra protection for the lower part of the back of your head. It is also comfortable and looks great in the matte-black color.
