Customer Reviews

Excellent bike for the price4
Bike was easy to assemble with basic tools, minor adjustments to gears and breaks and I was riding it within two hours of shipment arrival. It is a bit heavy, but I live in south florida and there are no real "Mountains" to go mountain biking, so this is the perfect bike here. It is a very good looking bike, and after a month of riding it every other day I am completely satisfied with it.

Great Bike for The Right Rider5
I purchased this bike about 10 days before this review was written and have had it for about 8 of those days. This is my first time owning a bike since I was about 13 (I'm 18 now) and my first time owning a 26 inch. I bought this bike so that I could squeeze more physical activity into my day because I work a lot and don't really have time to go to the gym that often. I've ridden this bike pretty much everyday that I've had it and it rides great. It gets me from my house to downtown Baltimore without any problems at all.

When I first received the bike I was surprised that it arrived so quickly. I chose the free standard shipping from Amazon but somehow the bike arrived the next morning. Assembling the bike was quite easy. Any problems that I ran into were the result of the rest of my order arriving two days after the bike did so I was stuck using the tools that I had around the house. Anyway, overall the bike is a great bike for me. I love that it changes gears easily and smoothly. I also love that it was only $170 when I made my purchase.

If you purchase this bike, I hope you like it as much as I do.

Okay for a cheap bike3
I got this bike to see if I could get back in to the good old sport of mountain biking. This bike was a good encouragement...but I had a few problems with it even after getting it tuned twice.

1) The brakes were never tight enough.
2) The chains were slipping off and hitting the wheels.
3) The wheels were out of line.

But all in all, for the price...I can't really complain...but I'll probably get a new bike as soon as this one falls apart even more.

Customer Reviews

WORTH THE PRICE3
Bought this bike so I could go on small rides around the neighborhood with my daughter. Bike is perfect for this purpose, but if you are planning to push the bike I would look for something a little better. The condition of the bike when received was good and after some minor adjustments it was ready for the road. I could not be happier with how easily it went together and the quality of the bike for the price.

Great bike, great price4
This is a very good bike for beginner to intermediate riders. I got mine fully assembled from a local store for $130.00. I'm glad I got it before I started reading some of the reviews here, otherwise, I may have got something else, and I'm very happy with my Domain. First of all, some of the reviews are plain dumb. "Its too heavy" well thats why it costs $180.00 not $1,800.00. "Assembly was difficult" , look its not your todlers first bicycle and your not slapping on a set of training wheels. It has shocks, 3 peice crank, 21 speeds... if you cant take apart and put together (correctly) a 30 year old 10 speed, don't bother with this one, have someone who knows what there doing do the work for you, or find it locally already assembled.
Is this a good bike? YES. Is it worth the retail $180? YES. Would I buy another one? I AM, thats why I'm writing this! I ride mine 3-4 times during the week on paved roads, and on weekends I go to the dirt trails. If thats what you're looking for, this is a very good bike. If you plan on doing advanced/hard core mountain biking or competition, you probably want something much more advanced. I have not had any problems so far, just regular maintenence, like all other bikes do.
Bottom line, if you are beginer to intermediate rider, there is planty of bike for you here, you get a good deal for the money, and if you take good care of it, it will last you for years.

This bike is horrible!!1
I bought this bike from Amazon because it was on sale for $140 and had average reviews. I spent another $30 to assemble it. The bike is really heavy and hard to ride. The tires are too wide and the bike broke after riding it couple of times. I have had this bike for almost year now and occasionally ride it. Do not believe the other reviews. This is crap.

Amazon.com Product Description
The GMC Topkick 21-Speed Mountain Bike features a full-suspension, strong aluminum frame that utilizes a floating beam suspension design that is mated to a Zoom suspension fork with elastomer/spring technology. The Topkick's drivetrain starts with Microshift push shifters. These shifters control Shimano's tried and true TZ-30GS derailleur. The drivetrain finishes up with a strong aluminum wheelset featuring V-shape rim profile and high-flange alloy hubs. Stopping is handled by Promax disk brakes on the front and rear. These brakes are vastly superior to rim brakes, especially under adverse road conditions. True to it's GMC roots, this bicycle is rugged, good looking, and built for the long haul.

Amazon.com Bicycle Buying Guide
Finding the Right Bike
To really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike:

The Right Ride
In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:

  • Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
  • Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
  • Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price
A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.

  • Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
  • Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
  • High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultra-lightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.

The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

  • Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
  • Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
  • Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

The Right Accessories
When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons:

  • Helmet (this is a must!)
  • Seat pack
  • Lock
  • Hydration pack, or water bottles and bottle cages
  • Spare tubes
  • Portable bike pump
  • Gloves

Customer Reviews

Good quality, good price4
I got this bike for my husband for his birthday. I put it together in about 2 1/2 hours myself, and test rode it, seems to be working well. The toughest thing was adjusting the disc brakes, which I had never done before. I found it easier to adjust like this: loosen all four bolts holding the caliper assembly on, then lock the brake, tighten the two bolts attaching the assembly, release the brake, spin the tire while manually fine-tuning the position of the pads while looking head-on to see a little daylight on each side of the disc and hear no rubbing, then tighten the remaining two bolts a little at a time while maintaining the position of the caliper by hand. I also had to tweak the inside pad 1/4 turn counter-clockwise, but it worked well! Just need to see how my hubby likes it. The bike looks great, but is heavy. I will try to update this after he's ridden the bike for a bit.

Rear brake always grips the wheel1
The rear disc disc brake was found to always touch the disk, slowing down the bike quickly. Loosing the brake pad to make some space resulted in rear brake not functioning. An enclosed manual was very poor in its content, so I could not figure out how to resolve this problem. Very disappointed. I am going to return it.

Rare Inner Tubes...3
First, based on my experience, don't rely on the specifications posted here for the GMC Topkick Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike; actual parts used and their specifications may vary. Kent does not publish the same specifications.

Second, the original inner tubes for this bike are short on MTB durability and replacements are rare. The tubes on mine have a 48mm or "Long" Schrader valve stem rather than a standard length Schrader, which will not extend through the deep-v rim used on this bike. You can order replacements directly from Kent, use a Schrader valve extension, or convert to inner tubes with 48mm Presta stems.

In a little over three months of ownership, various components and assemblies have needed repair or replacement, including the inner tubes, pedals, brake discs, hub, and cables. Kent International has been very courteous in my dealings with them.

Good bike, but terrible chain2
I felt I should like this one, but unfortunately the chain broke after I have just ridden for just about 500 meters. I don't know why, but that was the first time have such situation. My old bike was 13 years old, without any maintance except changing tubes, but it is still working perfectly, just a little noisy.

BTW: the brakes are really difficult to adjust, just like what others said.

Not the best bike ive owned3
Bike came missing the caps off the brake cables and back rim was bent. After about 4 rides the chain broke off and needs a special tool to put back on.Also the pedels feel like the wiggle when you are trying to peddle fast.Spend the cash somewhere else not on this bike

Good enough~! :)4
I ride the bike to go to work. It is not bad to use.
Sometimes the chain is not properly working when I change the gear.
But it is worth to the price.

Customer Reviews

Great bike5
This bike was the only one that had everything I wanted (dual suspension, dual disk brakes, Shimano EZ shifters) and was under $350.00. I looked at other review, and people were comparing it with $1000's bikes... That's not even close to fair.

Anyway, if you want a bike that has really good parts, a good setup, and cheap, this is your bike. So far, I put a few miles on it and it is really awesome. Suspension, brakes, tires, weight, everything is better than I expected based on the price. A good exercise: compare it with those $300-$350 bikes you see at Sports stores and you'll realize how better this bike is.

Only one con: despite the easy assembly, the front derailer came totally out of alignment. I worked it a bit (I'm no expert), but I will probably spend some $ in servicing it.

Definitely a great bike for the price!4
For [...] you can't beat this bike! Granted, it's not near as light as the bike shop mountain bikes, but it's also a fifth of the price. I couldn't find another bike for under [...] that had dual suspension AND dual disc-brakes. Now, the partial assembly could have been better, though. Out of the box, the front fork was on backwards, and the derailleurs were totally out of tune! But the front fork was as easy as loosening the nut and turning it around, and the local bike shop tuned the derailleurs for [...] so I now have an awesome bike for right at [...] Overall a great purchase!

Not bad for price...but plan on doing some work2
I bought this bike new from my local store on sale for $180 dollars. I figured a full suspension, aluminum frame bike with disc brakes for $180 was a deal I couldn't pass up. I wish I would have.

After taking it home and doing an initial setup on the bike (adjusting suspension droop, brake pad clearances, etc.) I took it out for the first ride. I use the bike primarily as a commuter, but take it to the local trails on the weekend. The bike preforms as expected on the streets, but the rear suspension was a little weak for my liking. The bob while pedaling hard uphill takes away a lot of your power to the ground.

After my first ride, I got the bike home and did a second check on it (mind you, this is still the first day). I am meticulous with cleaning and checking my bikes after every off-road session. I found the rear derailler was loose. I took it off of the bike and found that the bike shop that assembled the bike did not use any lock-tite on the bolt. This is not a problem with the bike, but the bike shop. I decided to check all of the fasteners on the bike...same problem.

I have now had the bike for about 5 months and it is serving me pretty well as a daily commuter. I have found that as long as I do the maintenance on the bike, everything is holding up pretty well. The problems that others have had with deraillers not working and brake rub have not been an issue for me.

So you may be thinking, why did I rate the bike a two? Pretty simple, really. The weight of the bike and quality of the components leave something to be desired. I have had to replace all of the bushings on the rear linkage twice in the six months that I have owned the bike. Since I have only gone off-road with it three times, this is more often than I should have to replace them. The rear seat post has a tendency to slip down slowly no matter how much you tighten the clamp. I replaced the seat post and clamp and now have no problems. The seat that comes with the bike is uncomfortable at best. I changed that to a Sette saddle (not one of the big cushy seats) for a more comfortable ride. The rear wheel hub is weak. If you buy this bike, plan on upgrading that as quickly as possible.

Even though I only paid $180 for this bike, I have now invested well over $300 in maintenance and/or repairs. I would have been better off getting the Cannondale hard tail they had on sale for $350. Oh well, better luck next time.
